Ringing in 2010 – an Agis Musical Celebration
To celebrate the holiday season and usher in the beginning of 2010, the Agis Center for Arts and Humanities, together with the Overseas Chinese Musicians Association, have invited Ms. Yue Yang, a famous young Chinese erhu artist and Professor Xiang Gao, an accomplished violin soloist, to perform in the greater Washington area on December 26th, 2009. They promise to bring these Eastern and Western instruments in a sparkling encounter and offer a remarkable erhu and violin performance in both classical and contemporary themes.
Erhu and violin are each essential pieces among the Eastern and Western musical instruments. It is believed that the erhu and violin date back to ancient Persia, the place of origin for most musical instruments. While the forerunner of the string instruments traveled west to become the violin, it traveled east along the Silk Road to China and became today’s erhu.
Ms. Yue Yang graduated from the China Central Conservatory of Music. As a young erhu performing artist, she was the recipient of a gold medal in China’s prestigious “Long Yin Cup” Traditional Instruments Competition and a silver medal in the “Tian Hua” Erhu Competition. She was recognized and awarded with the first National Culture Foundation award. She performed as an erhu soloist and associate concert master at China’s Central Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra and is considered one of the most promising erhu performing artists in the country. From 2005 to 2007, Ms. Yue Yang had traveled and performed on government commission in England, Germany, Austria, America, and South Africa as a culture ambassador to promote Chinese culture and arts to the world. Ms. Yang’s performances have been broadcast widely on Chinese TV channels and she has recently published two albums.
Mr. Xiang Gao also graduated from China Central Conservatory of Music. He came to the United States to study music in 1991 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is currently a Professor of Violin at the Department of Music at the University of Delaware. His performance won acclaims and the New York Time cited him as ‘a Soulful virtuoso’. He is the first Chinese violinist to have performed solo in front of former Presidents Ford and G.H. Bush. Most recently, Mr. Gao was a featured soloist to perform for President Hu Jintao of China and the visiting King Carlos I of Spain. World renowned conductor Neeme Jarvi praised Mr. Gao as a ‘first class soloist of his generation as Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham and Lang Lang’. In 2007, Mr. Xiang Gao was selected by the Stradivari Society in Chicago to be a recipient of the Stradivarius violins for his international concerts.
The Agis Center for Arts and Humanities is putting together for you this special event with a colorful collection that brings out the best of the Eastern erhu and the Western violin. The erhu program ranges from traditional numbers such as “The Grapes are Ripe” and “Birds in the Hills,” to more contemporary music such as “Charming,” “American Tales,” and “Csardas de Vittorio Monti”. The violin program includes “Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25,” “Enchanted Evening,” ”Serenade of the Fisherman,” and “Sarasate Zigeunerweisen”. We expect these two outstanding young musicians will bring you a fantastic and enjoyable night with their music integrity and exquisite technique.
This concert will be accompanied by two well-known Washington area pianists, Dr. Jiayue Yang and Dr. Ying Yu, who have been great supporters of this event.
The concert will be staged at the Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in
Rockville, Maryland at 7:30 pm on December 26th (Saturday).
