Tai Chi âŻÂ INITIATE
A Starter Course to take you from beginner to
looking, feeling, and moving better with Tai Chi
Created by a retired General to protect his family village from ruthless marauders and maintain his health and martial power in his old age.
(Includes EVERYTHING you need to get started with Tai Chi today.)
Ancient China: Late 1500s
General Chen Wanting, 9th generation Chen family in China, had served his country for many years and retired to his ancestral village, Chen Jiaogou.
As fate would have it, his peaceful retirement was interrupted by the threat of roving marauders.
Brutal bandits roamed the countryside pillaging the remote villages. The imperial government was no help as they had become entangled in ceaseless wars against the northern barbarians.
The only "troops" the General had available to him were the local villagers, who were primarily farmers. Sturdy and resilient, the Chen family was known for their martial arts... they practiced a powerful style called Pao Chui, or Cannon Fist. But they weren't trained soldiers.
In contrast, many of the bandits were renegade soldiers who knew military combat methods and were hardened by constant fighting.
There was another problem... General Chen was old. How could he expect to keep up with the demands of fighting younger, stronger men?
Heading the advice of the legendary strategist, Sun Zi, General Chen realized he must use Unorthodox methods to defend his village against the bandits.
The General combined the Chen Family's powerful art of Pao Chui with military weapons, methods and tactics. To overcome the advantages of his younger opponents, he incorporated ancient Daoist Neigong secrets to build Internal Power... not as a replacement for external strength, but as a "Force Multiplier."
The Chen Family used these innovative methods to not only defend their village from bandits, but also to improve and extend the quality of their life. It spawned a revolution in the martial arts of combining life nourishing skills with life protecting skills.
Many derivative styles sprang up... all the other styles of Tai Chi, such as Yang, Wu, Hao, Zhaobo, Li, Sun, Beijing Simplified, Cheng Man Ching, and others descend from the original Chen family Taijiquan methods. While many later teachers only got part of General Chen's art, there is one line that inherited the complete system.
Considered a priceless family treasure, Chen Taijiquan was passed down in an unbroken lineage from General Chen Wanting to Grandmaster Chen Quanzhong, the 19th generation inheritor of Chen Taijiquan.
Shifu Shawn Cartwright, International Grandmaster Chen Quanzhong, Drake Cartwright
Grandmaster Chen Quanzhong was the senior most Chen Family Taijiquan Grandmaster in the world. We believe he teaches the oldest and most rare form of Taijiquan in existence. He was a student of several legendary Grandmasters from the 1800s and was entrusted with the Original Chen Taijiquan family legacy.
Grandmaster Chen Quanzhong's method preserves the oldest and most original of all the systems. Including the true Yin-Yang practice methods, Chan Si Jin energy, Fajin power, weapons, and devastating martial applications.
I am forever grateful that Grandmaster Chen taught me the Chen Family Tai Chi Chuan system before he transitioned to the next world.
My student's call me Shifu Shawn Cartwright. Shifu is a Chinese term that literally means "Father Teacher". I'm the 20th Generation Indoor Student of Grandmaster Chen.
Because Grandmaster Chen taught me like his own son (I'm his adopted Taiji son, which means I inherit his system... not his car)
I taught my son, Drake Cartwright, like... well... he's my own son (of course, he also gets the car).
Because the complete original Chen Taijiquan system is so rare and difficult to find, I decided to document the entire system for posterity as I was teaching Drake.
Recall that "Shifu" is a Chinese term that literally translates as "Father-Teacher." The deeper meaning is that a real Shifu will teach his students like they were his own son.
Which is why we decided to release these training films for serious students.
And since I won't hold anything back from my son, Drake... this means you get exactly what he learned! (except for the car key thing, okay?)
I've documented the original Chen Taijiquan lineage program on film.
Itâs the complete program of the original form of Tai Chi delivered over dozens of videos. Every movement, every technique, every step, kick, and position.
I also filmed the coveted Chen Taiji Jian, or sword form for you.
This program reveals our exact methods for how to get the next level of Balance, Relaxation, Health, and Internal Energy on a really deep, detailed, granular level.
But there was one problem with the traditional lineage program...
It is a huge curriculum... hundreds of lessons.
Which is a big commitment for those who are new to Tai Chi or those who have some experience but want to try the original style of Chen Taijiquan.
So, in consultation with Grandmaster Chen, we created a streamlined Tai Chi Starter program.
We didn't "dumb" anything down.
Rather we laid out a clear, logical progression from beginner to Tai Chi Initiate.
Its straightforward and designed to get you up and going with the original from of Taijiquan as quickly as possible.
The Tai Chi Starter Course includes the entire first level of the Chen Taijiquan lineage training program. Which means you'll have a rock solid foundation in Tai Chi.
Here's a little taste of what's inside...

Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you?
âI'm Shifu Shawn Cartwright and I've spent decades searching for the best traditional internal Kung Fu systems on the planet.
I wanted to learn the most authentic, effective, and powerful traditional internal energy arts.
That's why I spared no expense... Left no stone unturned...
Travelling across Taiwan, China, and the United States...
To study with the top Grandmasters of these ancient arts.
Shifu Shawn Cartwright
I also recognized early on that it's not enough to learn from a high-level Kung Fu dude.
They had to have the true complete lineage art, according to the ancient Liu He Ta (Six Sided Tower) system. These are the six critical components of a complete art.
Also, they must be a skilled teacher... someone who could actually pass on the skill in their "hand."
And...
You need a totally accurate interpreter who wouldn't "eat the pearls" and let the critical stuff be lost in translation. (Which is sadly too common with most run-of-the mill "interpreters")
â
I started my formal martial arts training in 1985 (before that I just learned some military combative techniques from a former Marine.)
Since then, I've been fortunate to train under some of the top Grandmasters on the planet...
Grandmaster Chen, Grandmaster Bai, Grandmaster Li, Grandmaster He, Shifu Lo, Shifu Alsup, and many more.â
I Co-Founded TCCII along with Dr. Yinong Chong with the express purpose of preserving these rare arts and making them available to a Western audience.
Dr. Chong, uses her proprietary P5LIM (PhD 5 Level Interpretation Method) to interpret these ancient arts from the classical Chinese to modern English so that nothing is lost, and everything is preserved in translation! She's the interpreter UN level interpreters want when they can't handle it. (And UN interpreters charge $600 per hour to translate!)
And I'm dedicated to teaching the complete, authentic system using the Liu He Ta system so you get the indoor secrets.
What this means is that you can rest assured that you're getting the highest quality and most accurate transmission of the traditional Chinese internal energy arts available.
Our mission is to help build a bridge between the Ancient Arts of the East and the Modern Practitioners of the West.â
Dr. Yinong Chong
What is your Chen Taijiquan Lineage?
Our Chen Taijiquan comes from International Grandmaster Chen Quanzhong, direct descendant of General Chen Wanting, the founder of Taijiquan.
Grandmaster Chen Quanzhong (1925 - 2025) is the most senior of the 19th generation Chen family Taiji masters. He teaches Lao Jia, or Old Original Chen Tai Chi Chuan. His form is believed to be the oldest surviving method of Tai Chi Chuan.
With more than 95 years experience training and teaching Chen Shi Taijiquan, Grandmaster Chenâs teaching method is methodical and thorough. He teaches to each studentâs level of ability. He has taught over 10,000 students in China, the United States, and Europe. Chen Quanzhong is President of the Xian Chen Style Taiji Association. He created the 36 forms of Chen Taiji, which reduced the repetition in the form without simplifying the art, which makes the form more accessible to beginners.
Grandmaster Chen was born in 1925 in Chenjiagou Village in Henan Province. He began his training at the age of five with his father Chen Shigong. He is one of the few living Chen masters to have trained with 16th and 17th Generation family members. These include Chen Liangzhi (16th generation), Chen Guoying (17th generation) and Chen Shengsan (17th generation). His family moved to Xian in Shaanxi Province during World War II. In Xian he continued his training with Chen Jingping and Chen Jinao (both 18th generation). He also trained with Chen Shouli (17th generation, and a student of Chen Fake).
Shifu Shawn Cartwright (TCCII Executive Director and Co-Founder) is a 20th Generation Indoor Student. He is the only Indoor Disciple of Grandmaster Chen in North America. Shifu Cartwright is also the adopted son of Grandmaster Chen, which means that Grandmaster taught him the true essence of Chen Taijiquan, just like he was his own son.
Shifu Shawn Cartwright taught his only son, Drake Cartwright, Chen Taijiquan and filmed the lessons. The films from these lessons are the basis for this lineage training program.
In addition, Drake had the opportunity to travel to China and train with Grandmaster Chen and his Taiji Uncles prior to Grandmaster Chen's passing.
This means is that you have the rare opportunity to get the original lineage system of Chen Taijiquan. Shifu Shawn didn't hold back when teaching his only son Chen Taijiquan, so you get to see and learn as Drake learns.
What makes this program different?
That's a great question because there are some people out there that claim to have complete lineage systems, but they don't.
There are two things required to get a complete transmission of the art: 1) the Grandmaster knows the complete art according to the Lui He Ta system, and 2) the art is properly translated from East to West using the P5LIM or PhD 5 Level Interpretation Method.
If you're missing either the Lui He Ta or the P5LIM then it's unlikely the instructor can teach the complete art.
Let's address each one of those cases.
CASE 1: Many instructors didn't get the complete lineage curriculum.
This happens because either their teacher didn't have the complete system or their teacher had the complete system and didn't teach it to them. Sadly, this was all too common in the old days because the "Veil of Secrecy" where some old-school teachers refused to truly teach. Further, few of the teachers who were willing to share their art actually had good teaching skills. Because teaching is its own specialized set of skills which takes years to develop. That's one reason we've invested a lot of time and energy not only learning the complete lineage curriculum using the Liu He Ta but also studying teaching methodology.
CASE 2: The instructor couldn't overcome the "East-West Communication Chasm."
The miniscule number of teachers with the complete lineage Liu He Ta system and actual teaching abilities cannot accurately translate the important concepts into English. Even if they can speak some English, they can't explain the deeper concepts, principles, and methods to Westerners.
This is called the "East-West Communication Chasm" and this makes it hard to correctly learn Authentic Kung Fu. You experience this Chasm when an instructor cannot properly explain the art and practice of Kung Fu to a Western audience (or they donât even have the complete art!)
Of course, this is through no fault of the instructor...
It's just that the way Westerners think, speak, and learn is incredibly different from the way Easterners think and speak
For example, many traditional Eastern Teachers are intuitive masters who canât explain critical principles in their own language, much less a foreign tongue. And few have any formal training in teaching methodology, which means they can only show, not explain how to progressively train a technique.
âWhich is why went go to great lengths to find supremely qualified teachers who have the complete art (Liu He Ta), use the absolute highest level of interpretation (P5LIM), and reject the veil of secrecy by sharing the actual indoor teaching films.
What is the Liu He Ta and why is it important?
The Liu He Ta (translated as Six-Sided Tower) refers to the 6 key components of a complete art.
1. With the Dao (Way), you can realize the Big Way, or overarching philosophy of why it works.
2. With the Li (Principles), you can understand what to do and why during times of uncertainty and stress.
3. With the Fa (Methods), you can know exactly how to train and master the art.
4. With the Shu (Techniques), you can know exactly what to use and when.
5. With the Bing (Tools), you can discover exactly which special training devices will radically accelerate your learning and skills.
6. With the Mi Jue (Oral Secrets), you get the secret, indoor training, rarely written down and usually only reserved for disciples (Lineage Inheritors.)
This means that...
If an art is missing even one of the Lui He Ta, then it won't work right.
Which is why we turned over Heaven and Earth to find the complete original, lineage method.
And documented it on film for the next generation.
What does P5LIM mean?
P5LIM stands for "PhD 5 Level Interpretation Method" which was created by Dr. Yinong Chong to lovingly translate these ancient arts from the classical Chinese to modern English so that nothing is lost, and everything is preserved in translation.
Dr. Chong speaks English like a Native. Sheâs also fluent in Classical Chinese... which even most native Chinese cannot understand... this means she can verify the direct ancient sources. She's the interpreter they called when UN level interpreters couldn't handle it. (And UN interpreters charge $600 per hour to translate!)
âSo, you can rest assured that you're getting the best and most accurate indoor transmission of the complete traditional lineage system available.
Which also means you get the real internal teachings, not a watered down or simplified âmade by committee cadreâ translation lacking the real internal teachings.
How does the program work?
How does the program work?
Once you complete your registration you get immediate access to our online TCCII portal.
Inside it you'll find your training program with your lessons.
Just select your lesson and hit play. And you can go back and review your older lessons. As often as you like. As long as you are a member.
One huge benefit to special online portal is that youâll be able to get your lessons anywhere you have internet. And you can watch them whenever you want. Which means you donât have to fight rush hour traffic to get to a lesson.
You can even watch it at Midnight if you want. Youâre in control of your training time.
And because we've already taken care of it for you, you donât have to worry about the effort and expense of searching for a qualified instructor. (And, if you're anything like us, you know how few skilled teachers there are out there in the vast sea of sameness.)
Can I really learn from an online program?
That's a good question. Let me ask you this... Have you ever learned anything from online?
If you're like most people, then the answer is "yes."â Although the martial arts are certainly different, remember that each method of learning such as books, demonstration, in-person group classes, in-person private lessons are all different.
They each have benefits and drawbacks. I used to think it was impossible to teach and learn online.... until the pandemic. Then we were forced to go online. What I found was that students sometimes did better.
Why? I asked myself.
There are several reasons, but the two most important were 1) the ability to deliver advanced private teachings with multiple angles... something difficult to do in large group classes and 2) the ability to rewatch films of the private classes to make corrections and improvements without having to pay for another expensive private lesson.
So, I realized that I could teach 100% of principles, theory, form, movement, applications, and training methods on video. In fact, I specifically studied film production and teaching methodology so I could make these programs as good as I possibly can.
âIn fact, it is even possible to learn the martial side things (obviously this refers to our lineage internal martial arts training programs) with the exception of the final 1-3% which requires "hands on" two-person work. You have two options to get this: First, you can practice with a partner of your own, or as a second option, schedule a few private lessons to complete that portion of your training. Since you'll already know the core of the art, you can just focus on just the final part in the private training, so it's a lot more efficient and cost effective.
The program is designed to replicate as closely as possible the private training experience while also enjoying all the advantages of modern online technology:
1) Access to private indoor training secrets for a fraction of the cost of in-person training
2) Logical, progressive, structured training program to make it easy as possible to learn
3) Multiple angles of techniques, applications, and demonstrations. Something you don't get in live group classes (in fact the people in front of you often block your view.)
3) Ability to rewatch lessons (something that is not possible with private in-person trainings)
4) Access to lineage training without paying for airfare, meals, and lodging.
5) Complete lineage arts on your own schedule without taking time off work (and associated lost income) or commuting across town in horrible traffic.
Can I go back and rewatch my lessons?
Can I go back and rewatch my lessons?
Yes! In fact, we encourage you to go back and rewatch them. That is one of the many benefits of the online training model.
I can't tell you how much I wish I had film of all my private lessons from back in the day... that's one of the reasons I filmed each lesson for my son, Drake Cartwright. These class films are an important part of his inheritance from me and I'm so glad today's technology allows me to make it available to sincere students... even if you live in another city or country.
âWhat's next?
Youâre standing at a crossroads.
One path is the familiar one⌠the comfortable one... closing this page, telling yourself youâll âthink about it,â and sliding back back into more of the "same ole same ole"
The same piecemeal practice, the same slow decline youâve already felt creeping in.
Doing nothing isnât neutral. Itâs how things quietly get worse over time.
The other path is the rare one⌠the bold one... stepping into the real internal lineage while the door is open.
Finally getting the clarity, connection, and internal energy your body has been craving. Feeling the satisfaction of moving with strength, balance, and real internal power.
Entering the door of the original lineage of Taijiquan.
And just so you know, the tuition you see right now is a special offering thatâs only available until the doors close.
If we reopen this training in the future, it will almost certainly be at a higher price... not as a threat, but simply the natural outcome of the economics, the depth of the program, and the demand.
One path leads to more delay, more decline, and paying more later for the same transformation.
The other leads inside... to the power, energy, and lineage secrets youâve been seeking for years.
If youâre ready to move forward while everything is still open and accessibleâŚ
